Good Samaritan Rescue Mission is a faith-based non-denominational homeless shelter located at 902 Nueces Bay Boulevard (big blue roofs) between IH-37N and Leopard Street in Corpus Christi, Texas.
In 1953, Good Samaritan Rescue Mission, lovingly nicknamed "Good Sam" by the homeless, began in a farmhouse on Upper Broadway in Corpus Christi, Texas. In the early years, Good Sam was simply a house church with a soup kitchen and eight cots for alcoholic and destitute men. We then moved and expanded our ministry to serve seniors who were unable to live alone and had no family but were too ambulatory for a nursing facility. In 1994, we expanded once again to provide shelter for homeless women.
Since 1953, we have grown to have the largest shelter for the homeless in this region of the state with 215 beds. We accept no government funding because we want to be free to accept a person who walks through our doors without having to qualify them first for a program approved by a government grant--and to be free to share the Gospel with anyone who is open to listen.
Although the homeless have many physical needs, we have found that their greatest unmet needs are often mental, emotional, and spiritual. Most have suffered a traumatic event in their past that has caused them to "unplug" from their life as they knew it. We can provide them with a bed and a plate of food, but until they are plugged back into a sense of community and family, their progress is very unstable. It is nearly impossible for someone to want to look for a job while they are still seeking a reason just to live another day.
We are open around the clock every day of the year, and we accept new check-ins around the clock. If you are looking for a place to stay, we can give information over the phone, but we cannot check you in over the phone. You must come in person.
ACCEPTANCE AT GOOD SAMARITAN RESCUE MISSION IS THE SAME FOR EVERYONE WITHOUT REGARD TO RACE, SEX, NATIONAL ORIGIN, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, RELIGION, OR *DISABILITY.
*We are not a hospital or rehab facility; so because a person will share a room with three others, we have these simple requirements. People must be able to:
1. Feed themselves
2. Bathe themselves
3. Move themselves
4. Medicate themselves
5. Not require diapers
